How to Protect Your Home from Spiders

Hobo Spider in the Wild
When it comes to creepy crawlies, spiders take the cake. Though most spiders in the Seattle area are harmless, there are some that can cause a trip to the hospital. Better to be safe than sorry and get rid of all the spiders in your home. But how do you do it? In this article, we’re going to be talking about the best way to protect your home from spiders. Let’s get right into it!

Deterrents

One easy way to prevent spiders is by spraying your home with spider deterrents. There are some products that you can purchase, however, there’s a simple home remedy that works great. Mix 1 part water with 1 part vinegar in a spray bottle. Using this mixture, lightly spray window sills, ceiling corners, and other places you have noticed these creepy crawlies. The vinegar acts a deterrent and should help prevent spiders from returning. We suggest re applying once a month.

Keep Your Doors and Windows Closed

One of the easiest ways to prevent spiders is by limiting their access to your home. Windows and doors are the easiest way into your home, so be sure to check all the screens for holes and all your doors for cracks or gaps. If needed re-caulking your windows and purchasing a door skirt can help prevent spiders from getting into your home.

Keep the Inside of Your Home Clean

As with most pests, their main reason for being in your home is for food and shelter. Maintaining a clean home can drastically reduce the amount of pests you see, spiders included. We suggest cleaning your home thoroughly at least once a week, dusting fans, cleaning window sills, vacuuming, and sweeping/mopping. By cleaning on a regular basis, you will prevent spider webs from forming, forcing spiders to look elsewhere.

Turn off the Lights at Night

If you’ve noticed a lot of spider webs by your light fixtures outside, there’s a good reason for it. Spiders are hunters, and are always looking for a good place to set up a web that will catch lots of bugs. Light fixtures attract a lot of small bugs during the night, and so spiders are drawn to them as well. By turning off your lights at night, these ideal hunting grounds will be negated and spiders won’t be drawn to set up home by your front door.

Get a furry Friend

A great way to prevent spiders is by getting a cat. Cats are hunters, and enjoy catching and eating spiders. Your cat will also act as a deterrent and prevent more spiders (as well as other pests)  from coming inside. If you’re already in the market for a pet, getting a cat may be a great option for you.
