Redmond Pest Control: The History of a Small City With A Massive Impact
Situated in the suburbs of Seattle is the city of Redmond. With a reasonably small population of approximately 67,000 people, this city is home to the world’s largest company by market capitalization and one of the world’s most recognizable video game brands, Microsoft and Nintendo, respectively. These two companies have had a substantial impact on the technology field and continue to influence and shape the experiences of billions of users worldwide. Indeed, the influence that Redmond has all across the world is substantial, considering its relatively small size.
Redmond has a fascinating history that shows how it grew from humble beginnings to the epicenter of the personal computing revolution.
Before PCs Even Existed, Redmond Was A Hotspot For Commercial Activity
The history of modern-day Redmond, WA, is traceable to the very first European settlers that arrived in the 1870s. One of those settlers, Luke McRedmond, filed a Homestead Act claim for some land next to the Sammamish River. The river provided an abundance of salmon – so much so that the name of the city was initially Salmonberg. After some back and forth with residents, Luke McRedmond successfully petitioned to have the name of the town changed to “Redmond” after he became postmaster.
During those early days, Redmond had abundant forests and fish that provided jobs for loggers and fishers. Those were the first people to settle in Redmond. After these people moved in, services started popping up. The logging industry expanded, and the city incorporated on December 31, 1912.
Redmond’s Economic Expansion
Prohibition and the war temporarily suppressed Redmond’s economy, but the post-war period had significant prosperity, which continues to this present day. Redmond annexed many times through 1951 and 1967. The Census Bureau deemed Redmond the fastest growing city in 1978.
In January 1979, Microsoft moved its headquarters to Bellevue, WA, not Redmond. It wasn’t until 1986 that Microsoft moved its headquarters permanently to Redmond. Later that year, Microsoft went public, making many of the early Microsoft employees billionaires and millionaires!
However, even though people associate Redmond with Microsoft, it was not the first technology company to come to the city. In 1980, Nintendo created a wholly-owned subsidiary called Nintendo of America (NOA), which sold the Game and Watch product line. After some internal consolidation, Nintendo of America headquartered in Redmond, WA, in 1982, a full four years before Microsoft moved from Bellevue to Redmond.
Of course, once these two great companies located in Redmond, there was significant demand for restaurants, entertainment, and other services to accommodate these tech behemoths.
Seattle, as a whole, became known as a tech hub, with good-paying jobs, clean water, and quality educational facilities like the University of Washington and Digipen (also located in Redmond!). Indeed, the east side became a tech hub!
Redmond Pest Control: What Pests Can You Find Here?
Of course, where there are humans, there are also pests. Redmond has its fair share of common pests. Homeowners in Redmond may see the following insects and creatures in and around their homes:
- Rodents (rats, raccoons, and mice)
It’s essential to contact a professional Redmond pest control company if you see any of these pests in your home. Some of them could be a potential health hazard. Rodents carry diseases, including Hantavirus, which has a 38% mortality rate, according to the CDC. Hobo spiders can bite humans, and those bites have the potential to be fatal even if it is reasonably rare.
Other pests, like ants, can cause significant damage to your home. Redmond pest control professionals go into properties all the time that have carpenter ants or termites wreaking havoc on the wood. If left untreated, these pests can cause significant structural damage to your home.
Wasps, although not deadly or financially ruinous, can make it very difficult to enjoy the outdoors. Nobody likes wasps buzzing around them as they try and eat, go outside, or take out the trash! Getting rid of these insects will make your quality of life much higher.
